From Clinic to Biopharma

In this excerpt from her Nonclinical Career Summit presentation, Dr. Nerissa Kreher describes how a clinical research–oriented fellowship, limited appeal for full-time clinic work, and a fortuitous connection with a growth-hormone company led to her first medical affairs role in industry. From there, she progressed through several biotech and pharma organizations.

She learned to thrive on cross-functional teams with colleagues in regulatory, manufacturing, operations, and finance, and eventually moved into senior leadership and board positions—all while discovering that she preferred influencing care for populations rather than managing an individual patient panel.

Three Core Industry Roles

To make the landscape concrete, she focuses on three primary entry roles for physicians: clinical development, pharmacovigilance, and medical affairs.

  • In clinical development, doctors design and oversee trials from first-in-human studies through phase III and post-marketing work.
  • In pharmacovigilance/drug safety, clinicians interpret safety signals and work closely with regulators on required reports.
  • And medical affairs serves as the scientific bridge between the company and external stakeholders such as key opinion leaders, front-line clinicians, and patient groups.

For each area, she outlines typical titles, transferable skills, and how prior research, publications, or safety-reporting experience can strengthen a physician’s application.
